God never intended for the law to produce righteousness. Today on A Study In The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and panel read Romans 4:13 discussing how the law was designed by God to reveal sin in man’s life. God wants man to see his need for the sacrifice, i.e., a Savior. Really there was no righteousness in the law except that it be kept perfectly, and man couldn’t do it. The law itself, Paul would say, is righteous and holy, but we were the weak part in the equation. God sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh for sin, to condemn sin in the flesh, so that we may receive the righteousness of God by faith. We’re weak in the flesh; we are incapable. That is why the law revealed to us our sinfulness so that we would look to the promise, like Abraham, and believe God and it would be accounted to us for righteousness. There was no way then, or now, outside of the Cross that we could inherit the great blessings of God.
