The deeds of the law, or the works of our flesh, are not how we are just before God. Today on A Study in The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and panel discuss how we can only be justified by placing our faith in Christ and Him crucified. Reading Romans 3:20, Paul was clear, we are not just by our own deeds or the keeping of the law, we can only be made righteous because of Christ’s finished work at Calvary. Whether we’re talking about the laws of the Judaizers, or laws and rules we Christian’s devise today, we cannot work out our own salvation. These outward signs of righteous living that the believer tries to adhere to is legalism. Seeking God’s holiness in our lives and that, which is good, is a right thing, but not when our faith is put in those actions or deeds, then it is a wrong thing. The believer is a member of the New Covenant community, our position in Christ makes us righteous by faith alone, and then the Holy Spirit will work to bring our condition up to that position. Justification is the required base and foundation for progressive sanctification by proper faith in our lives.
