Today on A Study In The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and the panel discuss the 103 years of the Maccabean reign, where they tried to merge the priesthood and the kingship together. The priests operated in both capacities and God wasn’t pleased. Jewish history reveals to us that the majority of those that entered into the office of the priesthood died. Those two offices were only to be merged in Christ; He was the one who was to be king, and He was also our High Priest. That came together in Christ, so that was an affront to the Messiah that was to come. Because of the diaspora, the exile of the Jews, they began to shift from the Temple concept to the calves of their lips. This was the new sacrificial system. The Pharisees were able to escape and make a covenant with Rome, which was where they were able to grow and create a means by which they could continue in their faith. The Jewish faith had left its relationship with God, and became a religion of God.
