Today on Insight, John and Josh Rosenstern discuss UNESCO membership regarding World Heritage Sites, and how the organization is maintained, as it is an arm of the United Nations. In 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States from her membership due to some anti-Israel decisions regarding historical sites in Israel. This also withdrew some 25-percent of UNESCO’s funding by losing U.S. participation. The current administration is planning to rejoin, paying some 150-million for 2024 membership, and a portion of 619-million as a back membership payment for dues from 2018 to present. China has become a large financial backer of UNESCO and likely is a contributing factor in the US renewing her membership.
