The disciples often saw the crowds as work with the constant demands, especially at a time like this, when their well-deserved rest was interrupted by the multitudes. But Jesus, He saw them and was moved with compassion. Each face reflected a need, a hunger, a hurt, being a thoroughly “other centered” person, Jesus cared more about the needs of someone else than He cared about His own needs. That is really the point of that term, saw; He just didn’t see a face. He saw a need. He saw the hunger, not just the physical hunger, but also the spiritual hunger and the hurt.
