Lady Justice is to be blind. Today on Insight, John and Josh Rosenstern discuss the newest appointment to the United States’s Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson. She is the first black woman justice. This appointment was presented as a needed addition with regards to diversity, equity and equality, using an agenda to focus on race and gender. Brother Josh references statements of Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, saying this narrative of race and color is actually doing the very thing they say they want to avoid. This was an appointment that was not inclusive, but exclusive, as many other qualified candidates were overlooked as the focus was on gender and race and not on important qualities like past sentencing practices addressing hardcore criminals. Brother Josh says the candidate’s personal profile should not be a part of the appointment to our highest court. These practices are the practices of systemic racism and institutional racism.
