Hanukkah means dedication; also known as the Festival of Lights. Today on Insight, John and Josh Rosenstern share the history behind Hanukkah, a time originating some 167 years before Christ. Antiochus IV Epiphanes settled in Jerusalem where he led the slaughtering of tens of thousands of Jews; a horrible time for the Jewish people, where Antiochus brought about this infighting to bring in the Greek/Syrian culture, known as the Hellenistic influence on Jewish Life. He destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, but it ended with the Jewish rebellion known as the Maccabean Revolt, as God gave the victory. In the purifying of the Temple from all it had been through, there was only enough oil to burn the lights for one day, but the oil lasted for the entire week and was considered a miracle that the Menorah lights stayed lit. Jesus acknowledged the Feast of Dedication, which we can read about in John chapter ten.
