Today on A Study In The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and panel discuss Romans 2:17. Behold, you are called a Jew and rest in the law. Brother Swaggart says we see here a blind and a mechanical reliance on the Mosaic Law, which could not save, and had never been meant to save. And make your boast of God, refers to the Jews glorying in who they were. They thought that their nationality saved them, and God specially treated them with special privileges. The law was not meant to save anyone. For the Jew to look at the law and think they were keeping it, when in reality they weren’t. This is what the Apostle Paul faced whenever the New Covenant was given unto him, and this is what the church still faces today with religious works, sacraments, and rituals, all which cannot save. It’s only by faith are we saved, not of works lest any man should boast.
