Were the Jews of old, Saints? Today on A Study in The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and the panel discuss Romans 1:7. To all who be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints; Brother Swaggart says every person who is saved is a saint, and made so by Jesus Christ and what He did at the Cross. Israel was monotheistic, serving only one God; however, the whole nation of Israel was not saved. For those who were saved, the holiness that we find in the Old Testament days is very different to that in the New Testament. Brother Gray explains how the believer is to be set apart, made holy. We are made saints through the born again experience. Many religious of the Old Testament, who followed the Mosaic Law, did not accept the Son of God as the Messiah. The Apostle Paul in this verse is referring to the elect of God, those in the early church at Rome who decided to follow Christ. Brother Watts says they were called saints for that reason. Brother Swaggart emphasizes, the term saint, is a very special designation because we are consecrated to the Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father.
