Today on A Study In The Word, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart and panel discuss the baptism with the Holy Spirit within the early church. Early teachers like Charles Parham and William Seymour taught that speaking in tongues was the initial physical evidence of being filled with the Spirit. The Azusa Street movement was dominated by the teaching of saved, sanctified, and filled with the Spirit. When William Durham, from the Reformer camp, was filled with the Spirit in California he took it home to Chicago where his teachings influenced much of Canada and the Northeast spreading the Pentecostal Way, but with the baptism as a power for service not sanctification. Seymour didn’t like the teaching on power for service and locked Durham out of the church. Brother Durham preached to his death what was known as the Finished Work Controversy Despite the many church splits, from the Church of God, Assemblies of God, and Oneness, Brother Larson says the Finished Work message seemed to be a lost teaching from 1918 to 1943, but now it is proclaimed day and night from JSM, the Message of the Cross.
